Ongoing research in our laboratory includes:

ˇ         Development of sensors to continuously monitor blood and tissue lactate concentration.
ˇ         Development of bioinstrumentation using microelectronics to produce battery-operated portable electrochemical instrumentation to telemeter and log data from sensors.
ˇ         Monitoring continuously lactate metabolism in the heart during studies of ischemia.
ˇ         Using lactate and oxygen continuous measurements in the evaluation of blood substitutes in animal models of hemorrhage and resuscitation.
ˇ         Development of sensors to detect pyruvate concentration in biological media, that is for use in bioreactors, the bloodstream, and within tissue fluids of the body.
ˇ         Development of a stable oxygen sensor that can be used in conjunction with adaptive rate pacemakers for patients with heart disease.
ˇ         Microbial production and purification of highly stable and active enzymes for use in sensors.
