Workshop Laboratory 2

Using the Biology Workbench

The Biology Workbench is a Web-based computing environment. It integrates a number of protein and nucleic acid sequence databases with the necessary analysis programs into a single interface. This allows you to perform your database searches and immediately analyze the results without worrying about the file format of your sequence or the often confusing command line options and flags. The Biology Workbench has already dealt with these issues.

Many of the remaining exercises during this workshop will depend on the tools and databases in the Workbench. Therefore, we have designed this exercise to familiarize you with how the interface works. First, you will need to follow the instructions below for registering with the Workbench. After that you will follow along in a non-interactive demonstration session and then explore the Workbench in more depth using the tutorial available in the Education Enhancements to the Biology Workbench.

We realize that some of you may already be familiar with the Biology Workbench. If so, help those around you with this exercise.
