Company Information
Bioengineering and Its Students
Bioengineering is an interdisciplinary major in which the principles and tools of traditional engineering fields, such as mechanical, electrical, materials and chemical engineering, are applied to characteristic biomedical problems.
Bioengineering industrial internships are available to undergraduate students who have completed all lower-division course requirements, including general science requirements (Math, Physics, Chemistry) and have some laboratory experience. Juniors in the UCSD Bioengineering program, enrolled in upper division courses in engineering mathematics, Bioengineering Design, Instrumentation, Physiology and Biomaterials, have sufficient background to work on many practical bioengineering projects. Senior Bioengineering students and graduate students are given more responsibility during an internship in line with their broader course experience.
Program Benefits
The Industrial Internship Program provides value to both students and industry, and is beneficial in fostering long-term relationships between UCSD and the growing bioengineering industry.
- Companies benefit from the program because students can be useful and enthusiastic assistants for certain projects.
- The program provides cost-effective services of students while giving companies early exposure to talented candidates.
- The practical experience prepares students to meet the technical needs of industry, giving them a competitive edge.
- Students gain valuable insights into the relationship between theory and practice, and hence, a better understanding of the relevance of course work in their major.
Every effort is made to maximize the benefit of the internship experience, to both the student and the industrial sponsor. Students' skills and expectations are closely matched to industrial sponsors' needs and training opportunities.
Corporate Participation
Companies choosing to sponsor an intern through the Industrial Internship Program with the Department of Bioengineering at UC San Diego are asked to:
- Identify a mentor within the company to whom the intern will report.
- Provide a brief description of the training activities or duties the intern will be involved in.
- Host an internship position for a minimum of ten weeks.
- Provide a brief final evaluation of the intern's accomplishments.
Student Participation
Students are expected to devote a minimum of 12-20 hours of effort per week (or up to full-time in the summer) at the sponsoring facility during the period of their internship and should plan their internship experience in advance, taking into account their academic course work, schedules, and the need for timely graduation. Internships are normally undertaken for academic credit (BE196) or completed on a voluntary basis. Although there may be some internship opportunities that provide partial remuneration in lieu of academic credit, companies are under no obligation or expectation to offer some financial remuneration.
Program Administration
The Industrial Internship Program is administered by the School of Engineering's Department of Bioengineering. Sponsors enjoy full service assistance with candidate selection, recruitment, placement, follow-up, and evaluation.
