Bioengineering Day -April 13, 2007
• Keynote speeches from distinguished UCSD alumni
More information can be found on the BMES website at http://bmes.ucsd.edu.
International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition - iGEM
•To enable the systematic engineering of biology
In the past, iGEM teams managed to partially or completely build a variety of systems, from biosensors to biological photographic film.
The UCSD Bioengineering students are in the process of forming a team to compete. They ask for your support. For more information on how you can help, please contact Edward Chuong at echuong@ucsd.edu.
8th Annual UC Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium – Shu Chien
UCSD Department of Bioengineering Senior Design Project 2007-08 – Melissa Kurtis Micou
Our industrial partner, Breg has worked successfully with UCSD and Dr. Bob Sah on a Senior Design Project. .The project, titled Bioengineering Undergraduate Industry Link for Design (BUILD) is in its third round. This program exposes undergraduate students to a hands-on practical application of research and development in the context of a design project. Students receive credit for these projects and are required to write a final paper and present the results to the company’s executive staff. Mr. Burke has nine engineers who work for him and are excited about being involved and in touch with the students. One benefit for Breg is they are exposed to top-notch interns from the program. It is estimated over the 3 years, the BUILD program cost Breg less than $10,000.
Hank Werronen asked if the students are required to do a business plan for these projects. Dr. Micou explained that these projects focus mostly on research and some commercialization so implementing a business plan would be a great addition. Another thought was involving students outside Bioengineering such as those in the Rady School of Management.
Iman Famili asked Mr. Burke how many hours per week the industry representatives met and interacted with the students. Meetings usually take an hour per week and most interactions are done over the phone and by email. Students do the work, the involved industry mainly supervise the project.
For more information regarding the Senior Design Project, please contact Melissa Micou at (mmicou@bioeng.ucsd.edu)
Dr. Gough asked the industry members’ opinion on whether the emphasis should be more on the application or on the basic engineering science. Mr. Burke commented that there has to be a balance depending on what the student is planning to do. If the student wants to go for their master’s or Ph.D. then he/she would need to focus on the basics. If they are planning to go into industry, then the focus should be on application. The balance is tricky because one has to understand the basics to be able to apply them.
