Outreach

Advancing knowledge in biomedical engineering by promoting interdisciplinary research and training dedicated to improving human health.
The Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering (WIBE) is a premier research institute composed of over 100 faculty and research scientist from UCSD engineering, medical, natural science and oceanography disciplines, as well as members of neighboring institutions including the Burnham Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, and the Scripps Research Institute. Its purpose is to promote interaction among faculty and students at the interfaces of engineering, biology and medicine. The Institute is named in recognition of the contributions made by the Whitaker Foundation to Bioengineering at UCSD. A major goal of the WIBE is to enhance industry-academia collaboration and interaction. The WIBE Industrial Affiliates Program was created to further this cooperation. The mission of the Affiliates Program is to provide an interface between industry and the WIBE and to build partnerships. The Industrial Affiliates Program helps match member companies with WIBE faculty and researchers who have related research interests. The Industrial Affiliates Program also provides member companies with specialized access to students for company human resource needs, coordinates student internship opportunities, and provides a forum for industry to communicate its needs to help set education and research goals for the future
Membership Benefits
The WIBE is committed to making the Affiliates Program a valuable resource to its members. Benefits of the Program include:
Access to WIBE faculty and researchers.
The WIBE has more than 100 members from disciplines ranging from engineering, medicine, biology to chemistry. Member research interests include biotechnology, cell biology and biophysics, computation and modeling, diseases, molecular biology, organs / systems, and tissue responses in health and disease.

Direct access to the Industrial Internship Program.
The WIBE in cooperation with the Department of Bioengineering co-sponsors the graduate Industrial Training Program and the Undergraduate Internship Program. Affiliate members receive priority access and placement of students.

Company Informative Meetings.
The WIBE will coordinate on-campus or company site-visits, where companies can learn about faculty research and discuss opportunities for collaboration. WIBE faculty is eager to work with your company. The WIBE will work with you to identify faculty research collaborations.
Through strong research collaborations, our faculty work on fundamental problems and technologies that will form the basis of future products, and professional engineers gain from the cutting edge research coming out of our laboratories.

Company Sponsored Events and Outreach.
The Industrial Affiliates Program sponsors many student programs, such as the Annual Bioengineering Graduate Student Research Symposium.

Free subscription to the WIBE Newsletter.
The quarterly newsletter of the WIBE contains information regarding current events, faculty research highlights, and recent graduates.

Networking among WIBE members and other Affiliate members.
The WIBE fosters research collaborations through the holding of seminars, symposia, and workshops, as outlined above. These scientific activities bring together scientists in the WIBE and those in other programs on campus and other institutions. The interchange and dialogues will enhance the opportunities of collaborations. The enhancement of interaction with industry fosters research collaboration with industry.

Industrial Advisory Board.
All Affiliate member companies have representation on the quarterly Advisory Board meetings. The Advisory Board meetings are an excellent opportunity for your company to learn more about the WIBE research, as well as an opportunity to voice your opinions and offer advice regarding our programs to ensure that our curriculum is relevant and prepares students to become productive leaders in the changing economy.

The Future
The future of biomedical engineering at UCSD is bright. The new Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall will become the headquarters for the Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Construction of the Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall will be completed in 2002.This unique building will allow UCSD to take biomedical engineering to the highest level by promoting and environment in which research, education and technology transfer are intimately linked. Unique features of the building include core technology facilities in nanotechnology, information technology, in-vivo technology, biotechnology, and biofabrication. The core technology facilities will foster collaboration across all engineering and biomedical disciplines, state of the art teaching laboratories for hands on education, and programs to facilitate technology transfer.
